Service Quilts Past Articles and Events

{Service Day}

Wed, Mar 17, 2021

Sarah Yorgason is our service chair this year.

This annual event almost didn’t happen, but it is happening! Many things have fallen into place for our service day meeting on Wednesday, March 17.

There are several places to participate:

  1. In your own home.

  2. At the home of Sandy Lai in Mapleton 10-3

  3. At American Quilting in Orem 11-3

  4. Create your own group of friends at your own place

We will meet at 1:30 pm via zoom to share what we are working on and have a prize drawing.

(Bring your own lunch)

There are several ways to serve through quilting:

  1. We have precut quilt kits ready to sew using your machine

  2. We have enveloped tops that can be tied

  3. We have tops with batting and backing that can be machine quilted

  4. Pick up donated supplies to finish your own donation project in process. We have some larger pieces for backings and batting for you to use.

Donate items or pick up kits and supplies at these times and places:

--Saturday March 6 from 10-12 Lehi City Library parking lot 120 N Center St.

--Monday March 15 from 11-1 Parking lot of Corn Wagon Springville

--Wednesday March 17 from 9-11 AM Parking Lot of American Quilting Orem

RSVP survey was sent via email. Please fill it out to be entered in the prize drawings.

What are we doing?

You get to pick your project wherever you will be.

Sarah has tons of kits with projects at different stages:

-blocks that can be sewn into tops

-two pieces of flannel that can be made into blankets

-small tops that can be tied with yarn

-lots of tops that can be machine quilted.

-batting to be added to your own supplies to make a quilt

So it is really up to you and what you want to bring with you!

Sarah's article in Feb newsletter:

I am so excited to help focus our service efforts for the guild this year! I spent much of last year going through my sewing room and sending stuff to other places where it can be better used. Throughout the year I will spotlight a new organization and ways we can help with projects or with supply donations.

We will continue to help with the Baby your Baby project. They currently have only a two month supply of baby blankets!

For now, can you please go through your sewing spaces and find any unfinished service projects from the guild and work on them? If you are no longer able to commit time to those projects, let me know and I will come get them so someone else can finish them up.

I know many of you also organize and clear out your spaces at the beginning of the year. I am happy to come get your unwanted sewing supplies. You can text me for my address if you would rather bring them yourself.

Each month I will feature a pattern that will be suitable for a donation quilt. If you have a favorite charity quilt pattern, send me the information so I can share it.

SERVICE DAY

Feb 19, 2020 - 9:30 am to 3 or 4 pm

Utah County Bldg Ballroom, 3rd floor

51 S. University Ave, Provo

Location is pictured above.

Map shows building location, next to last year's location. Aqua circles show parking areas and garages. Most of the lots and street parking have 2 hour limit. Both parking garages have all day parking.

Making quilts for Baby to Baby. Some youth-sized, mostly baby quilts. Lots of help is needed! Donations of fabric, batting will be appreciated. If you want you can bring your machine, or yarn-tying needle. (A pair of scissors is also helpful.) Kathy will have some pre-binding kits at the January meeting for you to start on if you can.

Feb article:

This year we will be making quilts for the Utah County Baby to Baby Program. We will start at 9:30 a.m. and finish up around 3 or 4:00 p.m. We will be in the Utah County Building 51 S. University Avenue (old grey building) on the 3rd floor. There are elevators. We will make quilts for mostly babies, and also some teenagers.

Lunch is provided by the guild— pizza! Bring a salad or dessert to share, if you want. Thanks to everyone who has donated their time and materials! We are still in need of batting and fabric.

This is a great program—it services many student families, as well as immigrants. Nurses in the Baby to Baby program call mothers in need and offer them quilts/blankets. When the nurses visit the homes they are able to teach the caretakers about the importance of tummy time, and other baby information. They explain how tummy time strengthens babies’ shoulders and backs. They make repeat visits and are able to offer additional information as needed.

**April 2019 Recap**

A big shout of thanks to everyone who helped in any way with our Service Day. Many worked on quilts individually and/or in our group. Both kinds of service, along with donated fabric, helped provide a lovely pile of quilts to the Baby Your Baby program. We also appreciate those who brought machines and food.

I asked Bonnie Hardy, the county director, if I could share what she told me about the quilts and she agreed. The dozen or more nurses who work for Utah County go into homes to educate people about the proper way to help a baby develop and grow in the best way possible. One of those essential needs is for a baby to have "tummy time" for muscle growth and movement among many other things. They also teach about reading to babies and young children. Many of the families have very few resources, have never had a hand made quilt, nor do they have the means to make or acquire one. Many have also come from other countries where they might have had dirt floors in their homes. They wouldn't "think" of putting a baby on the dirt floor, or any floor now, and the new quilts provide a means for lovingly putting a baby on the floor. They often call them Floor Quilts. Allowing their babies to lay on their tummies and strengthen their little necks, backs, legs, etc will decrease further problems later. Bonnie also described how happy the quilts make the mothers and often she is asked to thank the ones that made them.

Thank you to those who are still working on quilts at home. Please bring them to the April UVQG meeting so that we might get them to the families who will use them. It was a great day!

March 20, 2019 - 9 am to 2 pm

Utah County Health Department

100 E Center St L600, Provo, UT 84606 - Actual address for 2019, behind the justice building  {not 151 S. Univ. Ave.}

We can use your help all day or any portion of the day.

It would be wonderful if each guild member could be on site when the quilts are delivered, that each person helping might know of the function, joy, and need this service provides. That goes for any quilts that have been donated anywhere by the good women of our guild. You ladies are the best!

UVQG Guild Meeting

SERVICE DAY

Wednesday March 15, 2017

9:00 am to 3:00 pm

LDS Chapel at 481 East Center St, Orem

Everyone is welcome!

Thank you to all of our fellow quilters who have helped with quilts during the last several years. We have blessed many lives. Continuing the tradition of giving, I dropped off 16 quilts at the Baby your Baby center this afternoon (Monday, Jan 23). The workers there were enthusiastic and grateful.

Thanks also to those of you who picked up quilts at our January meeting. Karren Barley and I have prepped many more quilts to be ready to take home on February 15th.

Our service day has frequently had the lowest attendance of any guild meeting. I hope we can change that. Our service day this year will be on March 15th. Our location has changed. We will meet at the LDS chapel at 481 E Center St in Orem. This is just a block east from our regular meeting location.

We have many supplies to make quilts, but can use more fabric and batting and yarn.  If you have supplies to share, bring them to the Feb meeting or to service day.

Usually the morning of service day we prepare and prebind quilts, then tie them in the afternoon. This is also a good time to practice quilting on your home sewing machine.
The guild will have pizza at lunch. Try to bring a salad or dessert item with you to share. But most important, just come.

Can there be anyone more giving than quilters?

             Thank you for sharing!

Special Service Projects

-Mary Killpack

The inspiration for our theme “A Year of Giving” and for doing Special Service Projects this year came from an article in the January 2016 issue of American Quilter, entitled “Angel Babies” by TK Harrison.  TK has been a passionate quilter for 30+ years.  She has a goal to make one of her originally designed quilt projects, then make one quilt top to donate to a worthy cause – an even quilt-to-life balance.

We don’t all have the time or means to donate quilt tops that often, so we will be offering suggestions of smaller, quick-to-make projects.

Any of the projects suggested in the coming months can be turned in to me or one of the other board members at our general meetings, and we will pass them on to the organizations who will be most grateful for your kind donations.

Here is the first idea for a simple project that you can make to donate to someone in need.

February Idea - {Pillowcase}

February Idea -- {Pillowcase}

Basic:  A standard size pillowcase can be made from one yard of cotton fabric, 42-44" wide.

Square up both cut ends of fabric. Open fabric and place in front of you, print side face down with cut ends along top and bottom. Fold top edge down 1/2" and press. Then fold the top edge over another 4" and press in place. Open up both pressed hems. Turn fabric over with right side up. With hems still at the top fold the entire piece in half by folding the left side over onto the right side, right sides together. Sew along the right edges (selvedges) and along the bottom using about a 1/2" seam allowance. Raw bottom edge can be serged or zigzagged if desired. Now fold the previously pressed 1/2" and 4" hems back in place. Stitch the hem down to the body of the pillowcase about 1/8" from the edge. Turn the pillowcase right side out, poke corners out and press flat.

The popular Hot Dog or Burrito Style Method has the same look, but easier method: All People Quilt (can add small trim piece)

Or make it even fancier with extra piecing or applique.

Service Opportunities for Quilt Guild Members - article in January 2017 Patchwords

1. Volunteer with UVQG—we still have positions on the board to fill and opportunities to help with one-time events throughout the year. Contact our current president, Maureen Tuttle at  801-592-1920 or at queentut1@comcast.net for more information.

2. Teach someone to sew or quilt– take some time to offer your skills to a willing quilter or sewer/seamstress wannabe.

3. Provide much needed hygiene products for girls in impoverished areas throughout the world. Days for Girls is an organization that makes reusable feminine hygiene products for girls  who otherwise have to miss school during  their cycle. You can find more information at daysforgirls.org or pick up a packet at American Quilting in Orem to get started.

4. Volunteer at our Service Day on March 15. Start collecting that unused fabric, batting and thread.

5. Donate a quilt or blanket to a local charity. The Women and Children in Crisis Center in Orem, the Food and Care Coalition in Provo, and  Project Sanctuary in West Jordan all provide transitional housing and are in need of bedding and quilts. Utah County Baby Your Baby is also grateful for quilts.

Other charities that could use your help outside of Utah. Just Google the name to find their websites:

1. Little Dresses for Africa  – a nonprofit that distributes dresses to girls in remote villages in Africa.

2. Camo Quilt Project  - provide a camouflage cotton sleeping bag to a serviceman overseas.

3. Benjamin Smiles Pillowcases—make a pillowcase for a child undergoing treatment for cancer.

Also Ryan's Case for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer).

4. Quilts for Kids—make a quilt for a child suffering from abuse or a life-threatening illness.

5. Sew Much Comfort— make some adaptive clothing (Velcro closure) for wounded veterans.

6. Newborns in Need—make receiving blankets, burp cloths, or bibs for newborns in need.

7. Lutheran World Relief— they are in need of quilts for impoverished people throughout the world.

8. The Linus Connection  - provide a security blanket for a child in crisis.

Quilts of Valor

June 2016 Update:

Thanks for all the hard work and support for this years’ service quilts. Our total quilts are at 244. Are we awesome or what? Most quilts plus some bibs, burp cloths, and booties have gone to the Utah County Baby Your Baby. Twenty-Six are going to earthquake survivors in Ecuador. And many more are for the Shriners Hospital and for the hospice groups. Quilters are the best.

Some of our quilt members hard at work at the April 2016 Service Day held at the Courtyard at Jamestown Square.
